Paraichthys xenos

Description

After deflating its helium sac and diving into Proxima b's oceans, the Tuomi probe found a creature similar to fish, which was an interesting contrast to the mostly plantlike life on land. It had spotted these from above the water before, but never got a close look at them. Now, it sees that this creature, paraichthys xenos, is one of Proxima b's most successful aquatic species.
Their mouth is surrounded by tentacles which contain cells which serve the same function as nematocysts, though they look more like claws. These are used to trap prey up to half the size of paraichthys, using an expandable stomach to hold them. Everything is held in this stomach until it is finished digesting, when it spits the prey out. Other species use these cells to trap plankton, gathering large amounts which are cycled through a smaller stomach. A shell covers their head, which is used for most of paraichthys' senses. It has a slit on either side, each generating an electric field to sense objects near them. There are also 2 eyespots on this shell, only able to tell light from dark. 2 antennae are also important sensory organs. The tail contains only muscle. Paraichthys is around 40-50 cm long.
