120 MYH - Vertebrate Squid

Description

In 120 million years, this descendant of the longfin inshore squid has its pen divided into 5 segments, allowing it to bend its back. This makes it possible for them to swim like a whale, using their swimming fins like a fluke. This propels them faster than other cephalopods, so most squids could not compete with this group. The 2 longer tentacles are usually hidden behind the others, and are extended when it's hunting. Large species, about 4m long, attack fish using their long tentacles. These are covered in barbed spines and bristles, which contain toxins to kill or stun their prey. Tentacles give them an advantage over other large predators, letting them stab at their prey more easily. The 8 other tentacles are to hold the food as it takes off pieces with its beak. These squid fill the niche of predatory whales and sharks from 120 myh to 150 myh. The ridge behind its head is the olfactory crest, which lets it smell its prey. The 2 fins on its head are actually ridges of cartilage that function as fins. Its siphon is reduced and only used for breathing.

I think cephalopods have at least 50 millions years left max.
